James Leitch Kindergarten Curriculum

The following are benchmarks that all kindergarten students should be accomplishing during the second trimester:

Language Arts and Reading

  • Identifies lower case letters at random
  • Identifies consonant letter sounds
  • Identifies long vowel sounds
  • Identifies beginning sounds
  • Learns phone number with area code

 

Math Curriculum

  • Sorts by attributes
  • Understands concepts of comparisons Tells time to the hour
  • Counts to 20
  • Recognizes numbers to 20
  • Writes numbers to 20

 

Behavioral Conduct and Parental Support

Listed are some behavioral aspects that kindergarten students will be developing during their school year. Please support your child by encouraging these habits through the suggestions given below.

Behavioral

  • Shows responsibility for own behavior
  • Displays self-control
  • Follows class/school rules
  • Cooperates, works and plays well with others
  • Stays on task/attention is focused

 

Suggestions to support your child:

  • Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats breakfast
  • Be sure your child gets to school on time
  • Spend at least 10 minutes each night helping your child with homework
  • Teach your child how to play board games (Chutes and Ladder, Candyland, Sorry, etc.)
  • Read to your child every night
  • Spend time with your child jumping rope and playing ball
